2003:  Akon students receive 1,100 school uniforms

Akot Arec, Executive Director of JumpStart Sudan, and Bill Williams traveled to Sudan with approximately $24,000 in donations collected in the Kansas City area and two duffle bags filled with $38,000 worth of medicine and medical supplies donated by Heart to Heart International.

They purchased $10,109 in clothing in Nairobi at one shop and 925 schoolbooks, 1,000 pens and pencils and Bibles at another where the shopkeeper donated a few hundred pens and pencils to help the poor in Sudan.

Upon arriving in Akon, 500 blankets and 100 mosquito nets went to the sick and elderly. Cookware was given to the women’s center. 130 outfits were distributed to school teachers, school staff, church staff and choir members.

The duffle bags were given to the doctor;  the medicine that JumpStart Sudan brings is the only source of medicine he has.  Fifty Bibles were donated to a Bible study program.  It took most of a day to to distribute 1,100 uniforms to the children.  Bill was shocked to learn that neither the teachers nor the doctor get paid.
