JumpStart Sudan Arizona Chapter:
When Chris "Koor"Garang was only seven years old, his family's home was attacked
and set on fire by Arab Muslims. Chris ran for his life and, until recently,
did not know what happened to his family. In 2001, he arrived in Tucson,
Arizona, as another Lost Boy of Sudan. There he became a U.S. citizen and
recently has been studying to become a nurse. He also ended up being "adopted”
by Carol Tierney and her family who supported Chris’ desire to journey to Sudan
to search for his family and to offer his nursing services there to help his
people.
In October 2006, Chris traveled to Olathe, Kansas to tell
his life story at a JumpStart Sudan fundraiser for the
construction of the clinic in Akon, Sudan. After he met
with the JSS board, they decided that Chris would become
the JSS Arizona Representative.
In 2007, through various speaking engagements and with help
from his American family, Chris raised over $11,000 to
purchase medicine and, through a church in Tucson, Chris
raised another $6,000 to buy mosquito nets.
He traveled to Sudan in May where he reconnected with
surviving family members and worked in
the clinic.
In 2008, Chris raised more funds and returned to Akon to work alongside John Akot
and Charles Bol putting in long hours where they tended
as many as 100 patients a day. |
