Since
Akot Lual Arec, a "Lost Boy" of Sudan, founded the
organization in 2002, JumpStart Sudan has provided
humanitarian aid to the region around Akon, Sudan which
is home to approximately 93,000 people.
Through four relief missions from 2002 to 2005,
JumpStart Sudan representatives have hand-delivered
blankets, school uniforms and supplies, mosquito nets
and Bibles to the neediest recipients. Medicine
and medical supplies were given to the one doctor who
serves the community to administer to the people who
flock to the area when they hear JumpStart Sudan is
coming.
The leaders of Akon recognize that their community's
greatest need is healthcare. They asked
JumpStart Sudan to help them build a clinic.
Consequently, all donations in 2006 were directed
towards accumulating funds to build a
Primary Health
Care Unit, or PHCU, in Akon. This small clinic
includes exam rooms, a lab, dispensary and space for
public education and the training of community health
workers.
This year's mission focused on the
construction of the clinic which began in January
2007 and the need for subsequent furnishing of the clinic with
medical and laboratory equipment and supplies so that
the clinic can open its doors to begin providing basic
healthcare to the men, women and children of Akon.
